Tutoring center admissions: seasonal SHSAT prep
Tutoring center admissions can plan SHSAT prep around the seasonal cycle, align lessons to the exam format, and set realistic expectations with families.
What to take away
- For tutoring center admissions in New York, the SHSAT sets the fall calendar. Eight of the nine specialized high schools admit on SHSAT score alone. LaGuardia admits by audition and portfolio.
- For fall 2026, SHSAT registration closes on Friday, October 30. The test runs on November 14, 15 and 21 (weekend sites) and on November 18 (school day). Missing the deadline means the student waits a year.
- From fall 2026 the SHSAT is a computer-adaptive test50 questions in English Language Arts, 50 in math, 180 minutes of standard testing time, no essay. Every question must be answered before the next one appears.
- Students rank schools in preference order. The city matches each student to the highest-ranked school whose cutoff they clear.
- For tutoring center admissions, the recurring fall cycle supports a summer intensive, fall refinement, and taper week.
- SHSAT prep is a seasonal spike. Elementary literacy and math is the steady base that keeps instructors employed in spring.
The SHSAT decides eight schools, not nine
The Specialized High Schools Admissions Test is the only entrance exam for eight of the city's nine specialized high schools. Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, Brooklyn Tech, Brooklyn Latin, and Staten Island Tech admit by score alone.

So do Queens High School for the Sciences, the High School for Math, Science and Engineering, and the High School of American Studies. The ninth, Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, admits by audition and portfolio review.
Cutoffs differ widely between the eight testing schools. NYC Public Schools publishes the lowest qualifying SHSAT score for each school. For 2026 admissions to grade 9 they were:
- 561Stuyvesant High School
- 539High School for Mathematics, Science and Engineering at City College
- 531Queens High School for the Sciences at York College
- 525The Bronx High School of Science
- 517Staten Island Technical High School
- 507High School of American Studies at Lehman College
- 506Brooklyn Technical High School
- 495The Brooklyn Latin School
These are last cycle's figures. The cutoff moves every year with the scores and preferences of the applicants and the number of seats, so use them to set a realistic range, not a promise.
Admission is a ranked list. Students list schools in preference order when they register. Offers are made in descending order of SHSAT score: the highest scorer gets their first choice, then the next, until a student's first choice has no seats left and that student is considered for their second choice. In effect, each student is matched to the highest-ranked school whose cutoff they clear. A Stuyvesant-level score does not produce Stuyvesant if the student ranked it second and cleared the first choice instead.
Families routinely misunderstand that mechanic, and it is the cheapest trust a center can build. Explain ranking in the first phone call and the parent stops shopping.
Unlike private school admissions, there is no interview, no essay, and no legacy preference. There is a score. That makes the work teachable and the outcomes measurable.
Format, scoring, and seasonal prep planning
The format is public, which is why prep programs can be built around it with confidence, but it changed for the fall 2026 test. Beginning in fall 2026, the SHSAT moves to a computer-adaptive test. It is given at students' home schools on specified school days or at testing sites on set weekends. There are two sections, English Language Arts and Mathematics, with 50 questions each and a standard testing time of 180 minutes. Students choose which section to start with. There is no essay. Paper versions exist only for the very limited number of students whose IEP or 504 plan requires them.

| Section | Content | Item types |
|---|---|---|
| English Language Arts | Reading passages and grammar | Revising and editing, reading comprehension |
| Mathematics | Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, data | Multiple choice and five grid-in questions |
The table above describes the item mix of the earlier paper test. On the digital test, both sections combine multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blank questions with technology-enhanced items. The ELA section covers revising and editing and reading comprehension. The math section covers ratios and proportional relationships, the number system and expressions, equations, inequalities, statistics and probability, and geometry.
Scoring is scaled, not raw. Performance scores on each subtest are converted into scaled scores, and the two scaled scores are added into a composite score used for rank ordering. Each school's cutoff shifts every year with the applicant pool and seat count.
The adaptive design changes test strategy. A student starts with a question or passage set of average difficulty. A correct answer raises the score estimate and may bring a harder question; a wrong answer may bring an easier one. A student must respond to each question before moving on, and in the math section cannot go back after advancing. NYC Public Schools also advises students not to assume that rapid guessing near the end of their time is better than a best attempt on each item. Centers should drill steady pacing and first-time accuracy, not skipping and returning.
The SHSAT is administered in the fall for admission the following September: students seeking a seat in September 2027 take it in fall 2026. Results for the fall 2025 test were released on March 5, and the 2027 high school offer release is set for Wednesday, March 3, 2027.
The annual test dates are set by NYC Public Schools. For the fall 2026 cycle they give centers a fixed calendar for a seasonal prep plan: a summer intensive, a fall refinement block through registration on October 30, and a taper week before the first weekend test date on November 14. Capacity planning is predictable by season, even though exact dates vary from year to year. Demand peaks before the test and then drops, making spring and summer the main preparation window.
Families who call in September asking for a two-week crash course are common. They are also the families least likely to clear a top cutoff, and saying so early is kinder than taking the deposit.
Registration and eligibility
Registration runs through MySchools. For the fall 2026 cycle, the High School Application, the LaGuardia Application and Specialized High Schools Admissions opened on Tuesday, October 6, and SHSAT registration closes on Friday, October 30. Publish that deadline prominently, with email and text reminders, and check the Specialized High Schools page each year, because the dates change from cycle to cycle. Missing the window means waiting a full year, and no appeal produces a seat.
SHSAT Eligibility Requirements
- Current New York City resident
- Enrolled in grade 8 or 9 in NYC
- Take SHSAT once per school year
- Request accommodations through school
- Limited English provisions available
Eligibility rules are strict:
- The student must be a current New York City resident.
- The student must be enrolled in grade 8 or grade 9 in a New York City school, including charter and private schools, or be a first-time grade 9 applicant.
- The student may take the SHSAT once per school year.
- Students with documented disabilities may request approved testing accommodations through their school.
- English Language Learners and eligible former ELLs get translated directions, translated footnotes in the ELA passages and bilingual glossaries, plus extended testing time of 360 minutes, twice the standard time. The test questions themselves are not translated.
Registration is not the only date that matters. For the fall 2026 cycle, the High School and LaGuardia Applications close on Friday, December 4, 2026. LaGuardia also has an academic requirement: a documented final grade of at least 65 in English Language Arts, math, science and social studies from the previous school year. A student can register for the test and still fail to submit a complete application. Centers that track both dates prevent a costly error.
Families sorting out the wider system need help with the city's grade-by-grade enrollment process, which is laid out in the city's Enroll Grade by Grade guidance. A center that walks a parent through it becomes the household's default advisor.
How a center aligns its program with the test
Alignment starts with refusing to teach generic test prep. The SHSAT has specific item types, a specific time limit, and a specific scoring model. A program built on SAT or ACT material wastes family money and produces weak score gains.
Four-Part Program Alignment
- Diagnostic mirroring real test
- Content instruction in tested skills
- Timed practice under test conditions
- Review cycle turning errors into lessons
Mock tests are the backbone. Run them on the same schedule as the real exam, on a computer, in a quiet room. The NYC SHSAT Portal offers a Student Readiness Tool tutorial and four online practice tests that mirror the actual exam in form and content, and the NYC Guide to the SHSAT for 2027 Admissions includes sample questions with answer explanations. Build these into the program before any in-house material. Parents pay for visible progress, and a score chart from August to October is the most persuasive artifact a center can produce.
Small-group instruction works because the content is standardized, but the highest-need families will pay for one-to-one. A group core with optional individual add-ons is also how you package tutoring center services so price tiers stay legible to parents.
Staffing matters more than curriculum. Instructors need to have solved the item types themselves and to know the scaled-score math well enough to set realistic targets. A center that promises Stuyvesant to every enrollee loses credibility after the first offer season.
The other admissions tracks that fill the calendar
Specialized high schools are the loudest part of the market, not the whole of it. New York tutoring demand runs across several admissions tracks, and centers that serve more than one smooth their revenue across the year.

The city's Middle School admissions process uses screened, audition, and lottery programs. Many families hire tutors to prepare for screened portfolios and assessments.
Gifted and Talented admissions, described in the city's Gifted and Talented pages, pulls in a younger cohort, often kindergarten through grade 3, with its own testing and eligibility rules.
Charter school seats, covered under Enroll in Charter Schools, are assigned by lottery. Families still seek academic preparation so the student is ready once a seat arrives.
Private and Catholic school admissions add another layer, with their own tests and interviews. A family with two children may be paying for three kinds of preparation at once.
The strategic point: SHSAT prep is a seasonal spike, while elementary literacy and math tutoring is a steady base. Centers that run both keep instructors employed through spring and summer instead of hiring and laying off around the test calendar.
Marketing that survives an offer-letter season
Marketing here is a trust exercise, and the trust is local. Parents ask other parents at the same school, in the same district, in the same group chats. A center with no verifiable results in a neighborhood will struggle no matter how good its advertising is.
Start with proof. Publish the number of students you prepared and the schools they were offered, with permission. Do not publish average score gains unless you can document the method behind them. Avoid promising admission to a named school, which invites complaints under consumer protection rules.
Keep marketing claims specific, local, and verifiable.
Marketing Action Plan
- Publish one-page SHSAT calendar each fall
- Run free diagnostic mock tests in September
- Collect and publish school offer results
- Keep Google Business Profile current
- Train front desk on eligibility and ranking
- Track neighborhoods and schools of families
- Follow up with registered but no-show families
Your local SEO profiles do more work than paid ads here, because parents search by neighborhood and school name, not by brand. A complete profile with recent reviews and accurate hours converts at a fraction of search advertising cost.
Referrals deserve formal treatment. Offer a modest credit to families who send a sibling or a classmate, and ask for a review the moment the offer letter arrives, when goodwill is highest.
Treat the enrollment conversation as a service, not a sale. Families in this market are anxious and often misinformed about eligibility and deadlines. A center that tells a parent honestly their child is not ready for a top cutoff, and offers a realistic target instead, tends to keep that family for years.

Common questions
When is the SHSAT offered?
In the fall. For the fall 2026 cycle, registration closes on Friday, October 30; weekend administrations are on November 14, 15 and 21, and the school-day administration is on Wednesday, November 18. NYC Public Schools publishes new dates each year, so check the current Specialized High Schools page rather than reusing last year's calendar.
Can a student take the SHSAT more than once?
Students may test once per school year. Most sit it in grade 8, and a smaller number of first-time grade 9 applicants may also test. A student who misses the registration window waits a full year.
Does LaGuardia High School use the SHSAT?
No. LaGuardia admits through audition and portfolio review. The other eight specialized high schools admit by SHSAT score alone, and students rank them in preference order when they register.
Do tutoring centers need a license to operate in New York?
Tutoring is generally treated as a consumer service rather than a licensed profession. New York General Business Law §§ 349 and 350 address deceptive business practices and false advertising; refund obligations depend on the facts and applicable terms. Confirm current requirements with the New York State Division of Consumer Protection and, for any employment or classification question, with a CPA or employment attorney.
